*'IRST ENGLISH LETTERS.
TARANAKTS LARGE PORTION. The first Christmas mailt for Taranaki from the United Kngdom arrived by the mail train last night. * The mails are exceptionally late, the delay bMndue to tho shipping strike in Australia", and they were brought to New Zealand by the Port Nicholson, which reached Auckland on Wednesday. The Taraliaki portion consists of the exceptional--1) large quota of OS baga, but only 20 bags (mostly letters) were reeeived last night, and the remainder is expected by slow train to-day, Those pcreons'who have been expecting greetings, letters, and presents from the United Kingdom have been kept in a state ot constant anticipation for some time past, it was thought that the Manuka which arrived from Australia on Tuesday, would bring the greater portion of the mails, but the taatter earned by the intetcolonial, steamer was the usual quota- of Australian mail.
