THE STRIKE.

MORE SHIPS HELD UP. NIAGARA'S SAILING CANCELLED. MOERAKI'S STEWARDS LEAVE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 2S, 10.35 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 2S. When the Moeraki arrived yesterday the stewards left the vessel, their notices having expired. The owners then decided to cancel the January sailing of the Niagara, and it will probably be the middle of February before any attempt is made to despatch her. The secretary of the Stewards' Union states that there is no truth in the reported statement that the transport workers instructed the stewards to return to work. If the stewards strike continues after the holidays it is estimated that ten thousand will be rendered idle in Melbourne.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. SPECIAL TRIBUNAL REQUESTED. Sydney, Dec. 28. Notwithstanding the recomtoendations of the Transport Workers' Federation it is understood that the strike will not be declared off till after the New Year. A section of the Trades' Hall officials involved in the strike intend asking Mr. Hughes to appoint a special tribunal on the same lines as the last tribunal to determine the issues. It is estimated that 20,000 are daily unemployed throughout the Commonwealth as the result of the strike.—Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assn.
