THROUGH WELLINGTON STREETS. DETAILS OP MOTORIST'S DASH. By Tel«2iapV..--l'resa Association. Tyllington, Dec. 18. The street accident is at present more or less mysterious. The car with only one occupant, the driver, was seen by the police and others dashing through the streets at 40 mileis an hour. Itß course through Willis and Manners Streets took it along the most narrow and crowded thoroughfares in the city. One tyre flew off and the car rocked from side to side, but the driver still kept on. There is a sharp' turn from Willis into Manners Street, and this was taken with difficulty. At the junction of Cuba and Manners Streets a large crowd from the empty picture halls was waiting for the trains. The driver still came on shouting that people should get out of his way and the people were running and pushing in all directions. The car was almost on the pavement and then swerved and struck an Island Bay tram. The running board was smashed and this took some of the impetus off the car, which swerved again across the street. LIST OF INJURED. Norman Beck and Miss Stubba, who weiie most injured were found wedged between the front wheels. The former was severely gashed and injured and the latter was suffering from a compound fracture of the loft leg. Thomas Steele, a returned ijoMHer, had his wooden leg Bplintered and was roughly knocked about. Miss Alma Oliver was injured about the legs. These were those who were most severely handled. Five or six others got bruised. When the police came to look for the driver he had disappeared, and Heck was at first thought to be he, but it was afterwards ascertained from the number of the car that the owner was one Clarke, of Lyall Bay, son of one of the best-known Wellington residents. CONDITION OF VICTIMS. Miss Stubbs and Norman Beck, victims of last night's motor accident, were at mid-day to-day in a critical condition. Both were operated upon last night. Beck regained consciousness to-dav. THE DRIVER ARRESTED. | The driver of the motor car in last night's accident, Charles Joseph Clarke, | who runs a health sanatorium at Lyali Bay, Wellington, was arrested to-day on [ a charge of causing bodily harm to j Beck.
