BOROUGH COUNCIL.
GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. V. E. Wilson), Crs. P. J. Hill, R. L. Parkin, W. F. Short, .T. W. Ilayden, and V. Griffiths. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. A. S. Brooker and A. E. Sykes. A letter was received from the electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley) on the subject of increasing the sinking fund. He remarked that the electrical supply business offers commercial advantages which must be availed of. The sueeesß of the department in the future would depend on the manner in which the capital charges could le reduced, as thcsi> would nsfily form the major Ja'ulity. He suggested that the sinking fund be increased to the limit, as the sc-lutbiv of consolidating the positon lay in this direction.—Consideration of the matter Was deferred till next Monday. At the request of the contractors in No. 1 contract intake at the hydroelectric works, the Council decided to take ever the work and enrrv i l . on under the Comic:;'-' engineer. Regarding the hydro-electric work, Cr. Parkin remarked that it Mi> biV gest task the Council had undertaken and he thought every effort should be made to carry on tiie scheme on business lines. Subsequently a special committee consisting of the Mayor, General Manager, electric engineer, and Crs. Parkin and Hill was delegated to attend to the aupmsion of the works making periodical visits to guage the progress being made.
