NELSON NOT COMING. The secretary of tte North Taranaki Cricket Association has been advised that the troposed match at New Plymouth against Nelson on December 29 .and 30 cannot ba played, as the Nelson team is unable to arrange (lie tour. In view of this, five North Taranaki players have been invited to take part In the match against Wellington at Hawera, on the same date, which the Smut Tarauakl Association has arranged. "THE ASHES." During a dinner to tbe English crlcketßrs In Sydney Mr. F. C. Toonc, .manager of the team, mentioned .that cricket "ashes" were not as mythical as most people supposed. He said that he had seen the "ashes" in England. Speaking on the subject later to a Sun reporter, Mr. Toone said that the ashes were In the possession of the manager of the last English team, and were at lis home in Bromley (Kent). "After the last tu; match in Sydney," said Mr. Tonne, "r/v of the stumps used in the game was burned to ashes, and enclosed In a golden casliet in the shape of a cricket ball. The remainder of the stumps were arranged at the back of the stand on which the casket stood.
