Webster, New Plymouth. j. . { FEILOING NOTES. (By "Moturoa.") Sandwiched In between two stretches of wretched weather, Tuesday and Wednesday were almost Ideal days for racing, and with big fields of good horses engaged in almost every race, it was little wonde* that the FedMing meeting attracted a large crowd. Taranaki stables were not strongly represented but Taranaki sportsmen (from all parts of the province) were It ere in force. The racing track was a trifle holding along the back, while a strong head wind in the straight militated against fast times. The cliib's stands and lawns were overtaxed, and the birdcage was altogether too small to comfortably and safely accommodate tbe big fields of horses paraded. The new electric totalisator worked well, and there was no reason to .growl at lack of betting faculties, for the number of selling windows was more than present requirements demanded. One fault thai might be rcmendled is the position of ihe ticket-producing machines, which might be placed facing the windows, Instead of to one side, thus obviating delay and needles* reaching on the part of the sellers. Thtn again 'lt might be advisable to p!ic.» Ihe horses' names under their numbers o.i Hie face of the machine. This particularly in races where horses are bracketed. As regards the general appointments the club 'is up against it" (like most other dubs) for building permits, but big improvi-nents will be effected when the building embargo is lifted. The grandstand wants mov'ng back and enlarging, and the present obsolete system of chalking up jockeys' names, positions at the post, dividends, times, eic, remedied by the erection of an up-to-date semaphore placed in a prominent position. All these matters, I was assured, will be attended to as soon as possible. Gloaming was the star performer at the meeting, winning tbe Feildlng Stakes aftor a tough race with Hymestra, and capping the rerfenmance by scofirfg more easily from Statuette and Sweet Memory in the Oroua Stakes. The stakes offered In these events were miserably small, and the club was lucky in attracting equities of the calibre of Gloaming, Silver Link, Hymestra, Llstowel, Statuette, and Acre for such a meagre outlay. Contrary to custom, the classics were good betting races. Gloaming was favorite,! of course, each day, but the fine second j dividend returned by Kembsll's bracket in the Feildlng Stakes caused many to go hunting for a likely runner up to Gloaming' on the second day. in consequence * the champion returned quite a respectable dividend. Of Gloaming it may be said that he van in lazy fashion on the first day, and Deeley had to kick him a couple of times"4o make him stall off a determined "dab" on the part of Hymestra. Silver Link was looking a perfect picture, but was too fresh, and did not have her mind on the race. Hymestra ran a great race In the Feildlng Stakes, but did not appear to be bustled in the Oroua Stakes Llstowel moved scratchily, but ran gamely American Beauty, who had the services of Gray, was out" of place in a clnssic Held, and Panache ran very greenly. Statuette got a rare si owing up on the second day when she carried 8 in into second place, and the public will not forget her at the holiday •meetings. Sweet Memory was raced by Grayto a standstill In tho Oroua Stakes, and just got squeezed out of second place. Acre was very much on the big side, but will be all the better for the gallops.
The distance handicaps were within" to enthuse over. The St. Andrew's Handicap was a muddling race, run at a slow pace, and the best, torse- didn't win—nor the second best either. Tenterfleld. a rather rough looking chestnut, was sent out favorite, but ran like it duffer and finished last. The pace was so slow that Client was able to lead right up to the half-distance, where Red Ribbon spiutcd and beat him bane. Depredation was fighting for his head all the way, and it Is probably accounted for him running wide on the .sh-.rp bends. Marqueleur gave a lifeless display, but was most likely s i lntt of a gallop. On tbe second day he was backed down almost to "even," while big money was alleged to have been secured about him coupled with Chimera and Miss Cold in the sprint event. Client was again well backed with t.-o Kcmball bracket, Tenterfleld and Bonnetter. next in demand. Tenterfleld was y iVK 0O we „ 911 fl|rlones from that ,t appeared to be his day for winning, *"' wh f" Dll l*"i«t!on van up to him along he back he threw in the towel. Marqueteur then ran up to socond place, hut he was •makmg heavy B „ !nB of It _ nm , .„,„ hg fhTv L With De[mdatl ™ it tte distance, for tho finish, and won nicely. Dusky Eve who was a close third, wa# running on' strongly and may be worth patching In a decent handicap this month. The others tad more or less rough passages. Chimera was the best of the sprinters, and ran two fine races, though she failed to catch Nursing Sister (carrying Ulbs. penalty) In the Flying Handicap. Miss Gold ran gamely each day. but she lacked the fresbness of the Finland mare. Admyra ran a surprisingly good race on the second day and may bo ticked off as a certain winner at Christmas. Slmoijldes is hopeless, and won't leave the post.
The hurdlers were a mediocre lot. Maniahere was a screaming tot odds-on favorite in the Waltuna Hurdles, but Just when he looked like doing things, he struck a fence and fell away to last. Considering ttat it took Mattock 3.20 to run the mile and threequarters this was not Manlahera's true form by a long chalk. Nobody begrudged Mr J B. Galsford a win with old Mattock. His horse never looked better, and he won very easily. Manhattan ran up to the form credited him recently, and paid a fine second dividend. Tempo ran one good race, and one very bad one. He's not a second day horse, that's evident. For a change Vlgilo stood up, and lasted long enough to beat an outsider in Whetoki in tte Cheltenham Hurdles. Mattock was troubled bv the weight and the pace, but' Lord Nagar' battled on promisingly under his big load. Coldstream ran poorly.
The crowding of big fields in the minor events, particularly in the Aorangi Trial Plate and Novice Stakes, rendered these races anything but true tests. Tbe limitations of the -4-horse totalisator necessitated considerable brackets in the former event, and by a strange coincidence Hallowroz and Miss Elva, though In no way connected, were bracketed' and flnisted first and second. The tote paid only one dividend, which w'as over a score. Hallowroz, who made most of the running and beat Miss Elvc. by a" nock, is a threcyearold fills by Hallowmas—Meroze. Maropa was sent out favorite, but did not begin smartly enough to have a chance. The Feildlng owned and trained Merry Queen finished weli in third place, and Is evidently a smart performer. Erin's Isle was a source of annoyance at the barrier, and Is a danger to other competitors.
The Novice Stakes resulted in another boll over, Minsk, a six-year-old mare by Martian—Stephanie, was quickly in front, and won all the way. returning nearly as muet as Hallowroz did the first day. The runnerup, Stylish Lady, is by Demosthenes- -Iney, and she will win big money for Mr. F. J. Lysnar before long. Festive, with Gray on board, was never sighted, and Mida again begun slowly.
Beloved ran consistently each day, winning tbe Kowhai Hack Handicap by a street, anil beating all but Borealls In tbe Nikaii Hack Handicap. Valdina (St. Paul—Vivacity), trained by Albert Jackson, chased Beloved home in the Kowhai Hack Handicap, and returned her few supporters a very big dividend. Nevertteless. she is not a champion. The veteran Namnr came with a great rat.le at the finish of tbe Fltzroy Hack Handicap, and beating Admyra on the post, paid nearly a third of a century. With an extra stone Namur finished third in the Nikau Handicap on the second day so her form was correct.
Amberlne was ridden by Gray each day, and ran two good races, hut the Kllhroney mare could not stow winning form under the V.7. weights she was asked to carry. However, decently placed, she will win a fair rare about the end of the .month. Maropa was again well, backed on the second day, but lost her rider after going a'hundred yards. McCormac got off with a shaking.
Voluble was backed down almost to evens for the Rongotea Hack Handicap, and should 1 have won. After racing with everythiag that I came along ire took the lead In the straight and was winning easily, when Goldfinch stopped riding. Gray then dashed up on Prodigal, and caught tho rider of tho favorite napping. For careless riding Goldfinch was suspended for 14 days—which was poor consolation for .Voluble's army of backers, Warrawee ran two splendid races at the meeting, and should bo cherry ripe next time out. ' The form in the Welters was hard lo follow. Jutland outstayed Idle Talk it the end of tte Kiwltea Welter, with Simon a poor third, finishing fast, and Railand fourth, Maioha, who was neglected or. the tote, shaped wretchedly, and the favorite, Matatane, was never dangerous when it came to racing. Aloutoa Ivanova, Rose Queen, Raceful, and Hurry Up also ran badly. On tbe second day the field was weaker, and Raceful, Moutoa Ivanova and Rose Queen showed greatly improved form. Moutoa Ivanova was in front at the distance, but Raceful wore her down In the final stages. Rose Queen was a close third, and Simon fourth Jutland was in trouble all the way, and Hurry Up (Gray) ran unkindly. A start has been made with the new entrance to the Feildlng course, broad tracks and flower beds on the plan of the Ellerslie entrances being mapped our. At present everything is a bit backward, but It will be an Imposing sight when completed. B. Deeley was in great form at Felldiug, riding five winners. Others to win a race were: P. Mcßrearty, Con Reed, H. Goldfinch, W. D. Young, H. Gray, J. O'Shea, A. McDonald, T. C. Reed, W. Blanche, A. Reed, and H. Ryder. TROTTING. j AUCKLAND MEETING.
