OBITUARY

MR. COURTENAY KYNGDON, AGED 98. There passed away yesterday afternoon an old settler of New Plymouth, Mr. Courtenay Kyngdon, a member of one of the first families to take up land in the Omata district in the days when the colonisation of Taranaki was just commencing, and a survivor of the historic battle of Waire'ua.

The late Mr. Kyngdon, who had reached the advanced age of 98, was born in Bodmin (Cornwall), and arrived in New Plymouth on October 29, 1850, by the barque Eden. The vessel, which was in command of Captain A. Murdoch, came direct from London, and other members of the Kyngdon family who were passengers 'by the same ship were Mrs. Jane Kyngdon (las mother), Clara, Georgina, and Emily (sisters), and Augustus and Adolphus (brothers), all of whom predeceased the late Mr. Courtenay Kyngdon. The family took up land in the Omata district, and on the outbreak of the war M(j Kyngdon became one of the garrison of the Omata stockade, together with other settlers from that district. He took part in the battle of Wnireka, and on the establishment of a Native contingent in North Taranaki he. was given a commission in this body of friendly Maoris. For some years Mr. Kyngdon resided in the UVenui district, and whilst there he married Miss Messenger, a sister of Colonel Messenger. Mr. Kyngdon is susvived by .Mrs. Kyngdon and the two members of the family, Mr. Charles Kvngdon (of Kexr Plymouth) and Mrs. Frost (Omata)
