J DISTRICT A VOLCANO. TERRIBLE EXPLOSION IN ITALY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—-Copyright. Received Nov. 29, 5.5 p.m. Borne, Nov. 28. The extent of the explosions in Vergato, covering a period of thirty hours, is unknown, but the district is a burning volcano which cannot be approached. Depots storing hundreds of tons of picric acid and huge stacks of bombing shells were blown up, and one hundred workmen are missing. Vergato, a town of four thousand inhabitants, lias been wiped out, and presents the appearance of war devastated territory. The railway station, churches, schools, and factories were wrecked, and 'steel girders crashed through house roofs a mile distant. The fire brigade and troops were severely injured endeavoring to penetrate the scene of the disaster.—Aug.* N.Z. Cable Assn.
