BETS BY CHEQUE.
JUDGE UPHOLDS THEIR RECOVERY, tt AN IMPORTANT DECISION. • By Tel»sraj>h.—Press Assn.—Copyist. Received Nov, 28, 5.5 p.m. London, Nov. 20. Mr. Justice Rowlatt, in the King's Bench Division, decided, under the Gaming Act, that bets made by cheque unrecoverable. The matter will be pursued to the highest Courts, for bookmakers declare that if the decision is upheld it will Involve millions sterling. Already some people have taken steps to recover losses, and it is stated that a member of the Victoria Club has received a demand for £19,000. The Official Receiver lias begun to intervene for the "benefit of creditors in bankrupt estates, and trustees and others are similarly acting. An official of the Victoria Club declares that as it is presumable the decision applies to all bets made during the period allowed by the Statute of Limitations many bookmakers would be ruined unless they were able to recover punters' winnings. The decision cute both ways, but chaos would result.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Aissn.
