PALMERSTON DEVIATION OPPOSED. By Tel»tr»ph.—Press Association.' Foxton, Last Night. I A meeting of delegates representing (local bodies throughout Horowhmma, Manawatu, and Rangitikei was held at Sandon this afternoon to discuss further action in regard to linking up the Main Trunk line between Marton and Levin. Sir James Wilson presided. Speeches were made by Mr. W, H. Field (M.P. for Otaki) and Mr 1 . B. Newman (M.P. for Manawatu), urging the connecting link as a work of national importance, wliereas the Palmer; ston deviation was not justified. Mr. Field severely criticised the general manager of railways, and referred t6 him as "an absolute autocrat." Resolutions were carried re-afflrtting the Government constructing the Mar-ton-Levin linlc as against the Palmenten deviation, and arrangements were made for a representative deputation to wait on the Premier and the Minister of Public Works when they inspect th» proposed route. The conference was assured of support from the majority of Pnlmerston lmsiness people, who oppose the Palmerston deviation, and the local bodies north and west of Marton.
