Bj Telserapa.—Press iMocliilim, t », «,. „ D"*""* *•& 1* ■ in the Police Court to-day, Alfreft Stephen Archer, undertaker, wio tela a Government contract for military funerals, was brought up on three charges of alleged fake pretences involving two sums, one for £6 and one of £l. Mr. Adams, Crown Prosecutor, said that the contract commenced on Jun» 20, 1917, ond ended on August 15, 1919, being cancelled consequent on matter* arising out of a departmental Jtoquiryit' Lengthy evidence tfas given by tela* trra of deceased soldiers, who state* that accused said Government coffins ■ were unfit to bury people in, and ad* vised them to buy from him better one*, The contract also included provisioaifor' a mourning carriage, but the relative! in some cases alleged having bee* charged for this. The accused reserved his defence and was committed fof trial. ■ Accused was further charged witftV obtaining £9 lfa 6d from Esther Martin, and also £lO froO Jafle* Best, by means of a false pretence. The Crown Prosecutor explained that the charge arose out of the death of a, seaman named Morris from influeuot., The accused ..'served his defence and was committed for trial.
