CLARKE MEMORIAL HOSTEL.
LAST NIGHT'S ENTERTAINMENT. A large audience last night witnessed the second performance of the entertainment in the Workers' Social Hall in aid of the Clarke Memorial Hostel. The scene, "Dream of Fair Women" (Tennyson), which was well staged, was admirably carried out by the performers, the speaking parts being well sustained, while the dancing items were gracefully given. The ringing down of the curtain was marked by the presentation of bouquets to several of the performers. The concert programme, which constituted the second part of the entertainment, presented several excellent singers. Mrs. John Eraser's items were exceedingly popular. The possessor of a fine modulated vpioe, she was able to give her several numbers with ease and an interpretation appreciated by all. On her first appearance the chosen song was "The Nile," and as encores this was followed by the well-known composition by Tosti "Parted," and "April is in Sight," a briglit piece, nicely rendered. In response to encores for the singing of "Spirit Flowers" and "Softly Awakes," Mrs. Fraser sang the beautiful "String of Pearls" and also "Snowflakes." In "Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind," Mr. A. B. Mardonald was very successful, and replying to a re-call he sang "Hats off to the Stoker," a rollicking piece with a marine flavor. Mr. A. North appeared in the Italian composition "Lolita," of which he gave an excellent interpretation, and also as an encore the spirited "Kamate, Kamate," a popular Maori war song by Ti Rangi Hirikaka. The male quartette (Messrs A. B. Macdonald, F| Okey, F. Hooker and A. North) were associated in several numbers which found much favor with those present, the tone of the singing being good. "Valse Styrienne" (Woollenhauft) was the title of a pianoforte solo by Mr. H. Morcy who gave a judicious execution of this piece.
