Talent among Taranaki school children will bo sought in essay competitions, while another prize will be offered for the beat -.short itory contributed by any reader oj the Daily News. Then there is. a competition for % mothers of young children which should' be particularly tempting, for the winner will be able to purchase, 'free of cost, and anywhere in Taranaki, a summer frock for a girl ranging in age from nine to twelve. First prize, £2 2s; second prize, £1 Is. (2) Open to boys and girls up to 18 years of age.—Subject: "My Happiest Christmas Holiday." First prize £2 2s, second prize £1 Is. A SHORT STORY. The Best Short Story of about 1000 words or less, open to any reader of the Daily News. First prize £3 3s. The editor reserves the right to use, for on* issue only, any story submitted, the author to receive £1 Is. Our copyright for stories used will only exist for this issue, but no story which has been published elsewhere will be considered. / HOW TO WIN A FROCK. Competition for the best design of a summer frock suitable for a girl of 9 to 12 years. Prize: An order on any dressmaker in Taranaki for a frock made in accordance with the winning design. In this competition it is not essential that sketches should be submitted, though this will be helpful to the judge. Competitors should, however, give very full details of how to make the frock, how much and what material is employed, and how much it will cost at to-day'e retail prices. The prize will be awarded for simplicity of style and economy in material and labor. CONDITIONS. This competition is strictly limited to amateurs, and the editor reserves the right to reject any eptry without stating his reason. ' , All competitions definitely close on Saturday night, December 4. Competitors, in each case, should address their contributions: "Tho Editor, Christmas Number, Taranaki Doily News,' New. Plymouth." If it is desired to have Un« successful matter returced a stamped addressed envelope should be enclosed. In order that names may not be al< lowed to influence the judges, competitors should attach their name and full address to their contribution on a separate sheet, so that it can be removed, and a code substituted, before the contribution is submitted to the judge.
