A cable from London announces the death of Mr. Rjchard Belt, sculptor. The death is reported from Whangarei of Mr. L. B. Bird, who was at one time on the staff of the Eltliam branch of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. J. H. Robertson, of the Wellington Lands and Survey Office, lias been appointed accountant in the New Plymouth branch of the department. i Mr. Arthur Hugh Fletcher has been appointed deputy-registrar of deeds and assistant land registrar, at Christchurch, as from April Ist, 1020. The late Captain Russell, who was a victim of the air tragedy at New Plymouth, was at, one time a member of the Bluff Press staff. Captain T. J. Waitc, of Newmarket, has been appointed travelling advisory superintendent of the United Fire Brigades' Association of New Zealand. Mrs. Jane Ryall, whose death is reported from Greymouth, was an old resident of the West Coast, having lived there for over fifty years. Mrs. Ryall was eighty years of age. Tt is understood (says an exchange) that the Hon. W. H. Herries and Sir Francis Bell are the Ministers selected by Mr. Massey to represent New Zealand at the Imperial Conference in June. At yesterday's meeting the New. Plymouth Harbor Board passed a resolution of sympathy with tho relatives of tjhe late Mr. Henry Weston, who was a member of the Board as far back as 1875. The death took place at the Patea hospital on Wednesday of Mrs. G. W. Verry, of Waitotara at the age of 03 years. The deceased was well known in the Waverley and Waitotara districts. Mr. John Brim ton, M.A., headmaster of the Hokitika District High School, hi'S been selected as headmaster of tho Waimate District High School, in succession to Mr. A. Bain, who has been appointed inspector of schools. At a special meeting of the West End School Committee last night, a resolution of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the victims of last week's aeroplane fatality. Reference was made to the keen interest in educational matters evinced by the late Mayor. A vote of condolence with the relatives of the victims of the aeroplane accident was passed by the New Plymouth Harbor Board yesterday.- In proposing the motion the chairman (Mr. Newton King) said the late Mayor.'was a virile man and one whom the town could ill afford to lose. Sir T. Mackenzie, at the New Zealand Club luncheon at Wellington yesterday, reiterated the statement that he had not made up his mind as to his future activities, but would be pleased to give his services to the people of the Empire, either here or abroad. He stated positively that he would not reenter politics. The death took place this week of Mrs. Stoddart, of Manaia. The deceased was a great favorite with all who knew her and was one of the oldest residents of the Manaia district. She was in her 90th year, being born in Bridge of Allan, Scotland, in 1830. She came out to New Zealand with her parents in the ship Stately in 1852, settling in Otago. She was married iu 1853, and lived in Green Island, Dunedin. In 1882 she came to Taranaki. She had a family of fourteen, nine of whom are still living, viz.—Mrs. A. Cassidy (Vogeltown, New Plymouth), Mrs. Cassidy (Fitzvoy), Mrs. Rcid (Renvuera), Mrs. J. Gilmour (Fitzrov), Misses E. M., and S. Stoddart (Manaia), Mr. W. Stoddart (Waipukurau), and Mr. J. Stoddart (Innha). She had 2!) grandchildren. The late Mr. J. W. Stoddart predeceased her 20 years ago.
