WAITARA.
RIVER EROSION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Nov. 11. Those who hold property on the river bank between West Quay anil Grey Street held a meeting in Messrs. Lund and Sampson's office on Tuesday evening for the purpose of discussing what action would be taken to preserve their properties. At every flood in the Waitara River from five to ten feet of bank or sections is washed away, and the position is becoming serious. The chair was occupied by the Mayor. Mr. Lund pointed out that concerted action was absolutely necessary, and should be taken if possible before serious consequences (not only to the owners of the sections but to the town generally) were entailed. He considered the Harbor Board and Borough Council might, give some assistance; though lie haiT been informed that the first-named body disclaimed liability. He would like to know of a practicable scheme for meeting the danger, and suggested that if the town area menaced joined together to be rated for a loan the Borough Council should make a grant. The owners of the properties who were, directly concerned at present were Messrs. Brabant, Emery, Evan .Tone?, and the sneaker. There was also the matter of borough streets being washed away, and generally the people over a fairly wide area should be concerned in the serious erosion that is taking place. Mr. Dowsett, the Clifton county engineer, stated to the meeting that it did not appear the Harbor Board had anv liability, but the Borough Council, he thought, had power to spend money to protect its own streets. A River Board could rate up to six farthings on Its own account, and its authority was extensive.
The Mayor said he was informed that the Harbor Board could only spend its money in river improvement from a navigation point of view
It was suggested that the Borough Council should be approached with a view to the Government being asked for an engineer to report on the danger the inroads of the river is making.
GENERAL. The Waiau School was examined on the 20th October by Inspector Ballantyne, when all the pupils were present. Considerable improvement has been effected in the school grounds since our last viait, also in this small school a good foundation of work has been laid. The following cargo was lifted by the Leitnm at its recent loading:—2B,Bs6 carcases lamb and 12,943 mutton (of this quantity the Smart Road works contributed 16,608 carcases lamb and 3000 carcases mutton). The vessel delivers portion of her cargo at Boston and New York.
Owing to the postponement of the sports from Labor Day, and the Leatrim s loading, the event was not a verv successful affair
