SOUTH AFRICAN WAR VETERANS.
MEETING OF NORTH TARANAKI ASBN, The second annual meeting of the North Taranakl branch of the South African War Veterans' Association was held at the Soldiers' Club, New Plymouth, on Friday evening, Oct, lfi, Mr. L. De Launay presiding. Tl:ere was a satisfactory attendance, apologies for absence being received from Yeterans G. Morton, F. Partridge, A. Llle, C. Mnckinder. and W. R. Coles (Inglewood), H. Abbott and W. Joll (Waltara), H. Smith (HUrford Boad), A. J. Baker (Waitaanga), A. McKeonn (Okoke), Sergt.-Major Bell, C. Beaver, W. Whelps, E. Alsop, and H. Cox (New Plymouth). In Ills report, the president congratulated the Association on its strong membership which UOW totals 80. He regretted, however, that some members were still posted as "unflnancial." " emplhaSlsed the necessity of Dominion organisation, and called attention to the establishment of a provincial association in the near future, delegates having been appointed to complete arrangements. Continuing, he briefly referred to the annual dinner, a social ns well as a financial success, and to the visits of the Prince of Wales and General Blrdwood, when this branch was represented. Members In the different districts were urged to "dig out" those vrho had not yet joined the Association. In conclusion, he eulogised the services of the secretary, who had "borne the brunt of the battle" In respect to organisation, etc. Tl:e balance-sheet allowed a credit of £2 14s 7d, Officers were elected as follow: President, Comrade L. De Launay (re-elected); lion, secretary and treasurer, Comrade D. P. E. Evans (reflected): executive committee, Comrades, Peter, Murphy, Morton, Ellis, Calvert, and Western. Members drew attention to particular cases of comrades In distress, remarking that It. was the duty of tho Government to succour those who had been incapacitated while on active service, or who had contracted illness attributable to the South African cam-, palgn. Hearty votes of thanks w&re accorded to Mrs. MfKean, Mrs. Tabor, Mr. W. Emeny, Mr. Brookman, Mr. Woollier, Paul's Estate, Mr. John Avery, Mr. T. JUchards, the Dally News, and.the Taranakl Herald for contributions. The president and out-going committee were heartily thanked for their past year's services. A vote of thanks to the chair and to the U.S.A. for the use of the building, terminated the meeting.
