MOKAU HARBOR.

MEETING OF THE BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Mokau Harbor Board was held on the 14th. inst. Present: Messrs, H. Maine, A. 0. Sampson, .T. R. Terl'll, and S. Whitehead (in the chair). A l-enrty welcome was extended to ex-secretary, Mr, J. L. Mac Donald upon his resuming his position with tVo Boprd. The resignation of iir. 11. Maine was revived and accepted with regret, members oppressing their highest appreciation of li)s Ktrrices. Notice of motion given by Mr. A. Ci. Sa»inpAMi at a meeting on September nth: "That uharfage dues on general merchandise be increased to 3s tld per ton, and wool to Is f-1 per bale," was dtecussed. • The mover pointed out that both secretary at\d signalman were receiving higher salaries Han In the past, and part of the Increase* hid to be met out of the harbor fund. In c'her directions expenses had increased much toyond pre-war days. The only revenue the I'inrd derived for general purposes flus from That came and went across the wharf, sub- ' s' 1 lies were granted for special purposes, and c'.uld oniy be applied to such, while the special rate was earmarked for interest and slaking fund on the £IOOO loan for rebuilding the wfcarf. Under the circumstances, he tVought an increase in wharfage dues was necessary. Mr. H. Maine concurred in this view, and suggested it was only fair since the Government had come to their assistance whene<er asked, that the Board should endeavor t i » assist the Government by making itself a* self supporting aa possible. Mr. .T. R. Terrili considered that with more settlement on the river, and a new dairy fictory in operation witb consequent increased requirements all round, the higher &«ale of wharfage proposed would probably n*t be a permanency. Mr. S. Whitehead, seconder of the motion, stressed the point that in the near future now coal measures wtiuld be opened up and worked, and a steady revenue derived from the export on coal. The motion was carried unanimously. Alterations in storage charges and for the handling of timber, cement, fertiliser, and wool were held over. Wharfage dues on cream and dairy produce were left in abeyance until such time as the up river district should be represented on th Board. With regard to impending changes in the personnel of the Board the secretary was instructed to plaeo the whole position before fii* Marine Dcparlenmt, and abide by Its decision. i
