ECONOMY IN BUTTER.
RESULT OF THE HIGH PRICE Economy in the use-of butter costing 2s lOd a pound is already evident in New Plymouth. Qne suburban grocer who has a fairly large butter trade, re* ports no sales on Monday, while yester> day not only witnessed a falling off ia, sales, hut many purchasers bought only half a pound. This practise, the grocer said, was a new experience. " v A leading town grocer, seen by a Daily News representative, was not prepared to confirm this experience, and though he admitted sales had decreased/he put this down to the fact that people had last week bought butter beyond their requirements at the old price. He stated that the sales 6i butter reached unusual proportions when it became known that there was to be a large increase iti price, and he suggested that many people are still carrying on with their la»t week's stock. On this subject yesterday's Dominion says: Cine effect of the recent heavy increase in the price of butter is, according to several grocers, the new habit of people, ordinarily accustomed to buy butter by tiie pound, making their purchases now in half-pounds. One city grocer said that his sales of butter had fallen off about 40 per cent since the price went up. Of his own knowledge, he was that the latest increase in butter and sugar was going to effect the standard of living generally among the wage-earners.
