''lf we have an early harvest New Zealand will be in no danger of a flour shortage," said the chairman of the Board of Trade (Mr. W. G. McDonald) to-day. "If V* have a late harvest there will he a slight, pinch, provided there are no further importations of wheat." During the war the consumption of wheat per head in New Zealand, as calculated hy the Government Statistician, was live and a half bushels, and this estimate is borne otft by the actual quantities of wheat gristed since the Wheat Controller's office has been in existence. In the first year, beginni»g on .Inmiary 1, 1018, the mills gristed in round ■Unlives ((,.11)0,000 bushels, and the total amount in the following year was (i.40!1.0()0 bushels, when the population of the country was approximately I.I'AOOO. The' Wheat Controller estimates this year, after allowing for the quantity carried over from the previous season ' (300,000 bushels) and jfor tin Australian importation of 1,850,001) bushels, and for the quantity fit for milling bought by millers, there is sufficient wheat, if it is evenly distributed throughout New Zealand, to supply each person with the five bushels which the previous year's figures prove to lie the actual requirements.
