SAFETY OF THE HARBOR.

TESTED BY THE GALE. Thursday night was one of the wildest nights ever experienced at the Break* water. The seas outside were mountainous, and hurled themselves with' terrific force upon the Breakwater, which resisted their attacks and dl&aipated them. The liner Otarama, which displaces 10,000 tons, lay against the wharf, snug and secure, though the range of the water caused one or two of her hausers to snap, but new hausers were ready to take their place. The vessel presented a big target for the wind, at least that part did that was not protected by the new sheds on the wharf, showing the wisdom of the Harbor Board in erecting the sheds, which are to be extended to provide full protection for big liners. The gale was es stiff a test as the harbor has been subjected to, and the fact that a large liner like the Otarama was able to see the storm through in perfect safoty proves the harbor's success, and should inspire the Board, to push on with all speed with the completion of the br**w»tej and the other harbor impTwrenWrtiv
