Captain Bone, marine superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company, has been in New Plymouth for the past week, and will return to .Wellington-next week. Out of seven applicants, Mr. J. F. McFaddcn, Director of the Eeefton School of Mines, was last evening appointed Director of the Westport School ot Mines. —Press Association, Messrs. M. Fraser and F. J. Hill, who have been in Wellington on business connected with the Taranaki Hospital Board, returned to New Plymouth bv the mail train last night " Enquiry at the New Plymouth Hospital last night elicited the information that the condition of Constable Wroblenski, who suffered a severe paralytic, stroke at the' Hunt Club races on Thursday, was considerably improved. Sir Arnold Gridley, a representative of the English Electric Company, Ltd., will be a visitor to New Plymouth during the week-end. The Government has just accepted his company's tender of £3,000,000 for. the electrification of the Otira tunnel. * Mr. Claude Haigh, touring manager of "The Diggers," is at present in town making arrangements for the forthcoming visit of that excellent combination of artists, which is making a farewell tour of the Dominion prior to completing engagements in, the East. A cable from London states that Sir Thomas Mackenzie is representing the New Zealand Government ■ unofficially at Toronto at the Imperial Commerce Congress and is also representing the English Chambers of Commerce at the Congress officially. He is leaving England on September 6.

Mr. P. E. Jeffreys, resident engineer for the Westland section of the railways, has been transferred to Wanganuj, and will be succeeded by Mr. W. S. Bagge, of Ohakune. Mr. Benzoni, who was recently transferred to Wanganui, after a long term in Greymouth, lias been appointed engineer at Dunedin, both transfers meaning promotion. A cable from Sydney says that Mr. Frederick T. Nicholson became ill while returning from, a holiday trip to New Zealand, and died suddenly from heart failure just after landing. He was a prominent Transvaaler, and a member of the South African Parliament until recently, when he resigned. Previously lie was private secretary to President Kruger and General Botha. Be, was prominently connected with Methodism and the Young men's Christian Association, and he was visiting Australasia to recuperate after strenuous war work.

The death occurred of Mr. Alexander McFarlane at Palmerston North on Tuesday night. Deceased, who was about 55 years of age, resided in the Pahiatua district for a considerable period,. He was for many years chairman of the Ballatiee Dairy Company. He was also a prominent member of the North Island Dairy Association and the Farmers' Union, and was one of the Pioneer members of the Pahiatua A. and P. Association and the Pahiatua Kacing Club. About nine years ago he i was elected a member of the Wellington Harbor Board for the Wairarapa district.
