THE TRAMWAYS.
THE EXTENSION PROPOSALS. OPPOSED BY FITZROY The proposed tramway extensions t. Westown and Vogeltown were discussed at a meeting of the Fitzroy Ratepayers' Association last night. Several ratepayers protested that the proposed expenditure was too great. While admitting that both Westown and Vogeltown were entitled to a tramway service, they did not feel inclined to commit themselves to such an expenditure. The trackless tram system was viewed equally unfavorably. The chairman expressed his confidence in storage battery cars similar to the one now used on the 1 Westown and Vogeltown service.
An expression of - opinion was called for from the meeting, and almost unani< monsly they voted in favor of the storage battery cars. The chairman pointed out that they had no wish to stand in the way of other suburbs as far as passenger ser vice were concerned, but they did not feel justified in giving their consent to loans for either the proposed extension of the present system, or for the trackleas System. A much better proposition, in the opinion of the Association, was tile storage battery car system, for which an expenditure of only "about £SOOO would be required. Two representatives, Mr. C. F. Foote and Mr. L. N. Fairhnll, were appointed to attend a meeting of the Borough Council to confer with that body as to which system should be adopted* to the best advantage of all concerned.
