Though the day for the most part proved fine the course was very heavy. The Hunters' Plate drew only five competitors, Blazeaway being a llttlo better backed than Signysian. It was good picking, as Signysian, after taking the lead at the ontranco to tho straight, tired under his big weight, and Blazeaway just beat him. The well-bred Griun Joke was n. fair third. The winner is by Carapflre, but. though bred in the North Island, he is owned and trained at Oaranru.
Bill Terry was a little better backed than Lawsuit and .Tolm Bunny In the Aylesbury Steeplechase. Golden drape and Sonny mads the early running, but Lawsuit had the race won :i long way from home, and he heat Clnldm Crape by a dozen lengths, with .lohn Bunny a fair third. The winner gave a. Then Arch Salute came on and beat Dainty Step comfortably Bengeroop and Sir Fanciful, loth finishing fast, were at the head of the others.
Iu the Styx. Hurdles Handicap Oener.il Petain and Tatimi divided favoritism. It was (rood picking, as he, led the field home. Ceneral Fetaiu was always one of the leaders, and be won very easily. This big fellow is going to ho a good one later on. Tatimi ran a good raco and easily beat Wild Pilgrim for second place. Mannish and Bombproof were both going; nicely with the front lot when they fell at fho second last hurdle.
Lochella. nnd Ilylans were scratched for the Sydenham Hurdles Handicap. Knurt King and Ladoguer were .best bucked in a great hefting race Deviation, tho outsider of the field, set the pare and lasted alone in the lead, till Kauri King caught him at the entrance to the straight. Kauri King came on from tho last hurdle to win easily. Delation might have been more troublesome at th< finish but for lilttlnir the second laat hurdle pretty hard. Jack Svmons ran a p-id race for third place. Ladoguer ran badlv, fin'shing last, while Thrace was just in front of him.
Tho Lincoln Steeplechase was a disappointing rnc3. as only three of the seven starters completed the course, and there was no excitement about the finish. Waimnl fell at the third fence, nnd Merry I.ad came to grief nt. the same obstacle In the next round Oakleieh led for hair the tourney, when San Sebastian took charge at the sod well Three ''encos from home he was inst clear or a bunch i'iit Coalition fell, bringing Oakleigh down. OD then joined his mate in the lead, am! won easily, with. Ormcsby a fair third. The first and second horses are trained in South Canterbury by S.'Ti'llfnrd, who has had a great .meeting. Coalition, was goinp great guns when he fell, and must have been dangerous but. for the mishap.
