SHIELD CHALLENGE FAILS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A match for the New Zealand hockey shield between Auckland (holders) and Manawatu, resulted in a win for Auckland bv five goals to nil. Tho holders set the pace for the greater part of the game, Manawatu showing up best in the latter part of the second spell. Perrin (the Manawatu full-back) was the best individual player on the ground. The scorers were: Grice (3), Sparks, and Alexander, the hitter's being the only score in the second spell. TARANAKI COMPETITION. NP. HIGH SCHOOL (2) v. TECHNICAL (2). The North Taranaki ladies' hockey competition has reached a very interesting stage The match between New Plymouth High School and Technical College, which was played on 'the New Plymouth Racecourse on Saturday afternoon before a large attendance of spectators, was <mite the lies! display of hockey this season, the result being in doubt right up to the call of time. Technical College had practically everything their own way in the first quarter, but the , excellent defence put up by the High School backs, spoiled many chances, but Miss Klvell shot a nice goal for Technical College. High-School now livened up somewhat and shortly afterwards Miss Brown shot a goal for Hhrh School, the spell ending one goal each, The second spell saw some brilliant play on both sides, and towards the end of the first quarter. Miss Brown was again successful in goaling for High School, after a great scramble Technical College now pressed very hard, and within four minutes of time Miss Andrews goaled for Teehuiral College Play was now very even until' ihe call of time, and tho game ended in a draw, two goals each. As the result of this match being a draw, New Plymouth High School, Technical College and Stratford High School are on level terms. Next Saturday is the final round in the competition, but tho play-off will almost certainly be between the above teams.
