FOOTBALL.

DAN O'BRIEN SHIELD. - I EASILY RETAINED BY TUKAPA. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the Dan O'Brien Challenge Shield match which was played between Tukapa and Star on tho Western Park before a good attendance of spectators. The match proved an easy win for Tukapa, who had no difficulty in defeating Star by 20 points to nil. In the forwards, Star, If anything, had tho advantage, but they were not supported by their- backs, whereas the Tukapa backs threw the ball about in great style, completely outclassing their opponents. In the first spell, in which Star had the assistance of the wind, play was fairly even. Jenkins, for Star, and Hooker for Tukapa, had shots at goal which missed, and then after a further spell of up and down play, Stohr obtained possession and scored, Hooker failing to goal. Then Dowland and Spence were prominent for Star but flush started a. passing rush In which about six backs and forwards participated, Crone nearly getting over at the corner. Quickly Tukapa used the other side of the field, and a passing movement ended in Stohr again scoring, Hooker again failing to goal. Then from a penalty, Oliver had a shot, which fell short. Star now took a turn, and a nice piece of play by Dowland, combined by good following up by Mills and Spence, saw the latter nearly over, and Tukapa were forced twice in succession. Then a pass intercepted by Hooker placed Tukapa in an attacking position. Emiis, by hanging on too long, spoilt a certain try, Spence being able to clear. Tukapa kept moving and in a scramble, forced the ball over the line, where R. Hooker scored after several Star backs had failed to fall on it. Hooker failed to goal. Half-time then being called with the score :

Tukapa 9 Star 0 In the second spell, Tukapa had ail the better of the game. Just after resumption, G. Hooker made a great opening, which e.<-ed in a force Spence, Mills, and Corraaek rushed play to Star's 25, but Hooker and Oliver Bros, soon had it back again. Taylor got over, but was called back. Star here infringed, and Oliver landed a nice goal. Another likely passing bout was ended .by Dowland intercepting. Ennis, however, cut in and wni nearly over. Then the ball came to G. Hooker, who cut in and transferred to Stohr, the latter swerving nicely, beat three men, and scored a pretty try, Oliver just f,iilin» to goal. Almost immediately, Johnson scored again from a forward rush. Oliver failing to goal Dowland and Bertram! were responsible for placing Star in a handy position, where Tukapa infringed. Jenkins just failed to goal. Then a. clever move by R Oliver and G. Hooker nearly ended in a score, being checked by Spence. Tukapa pressed, but Jenkins and Co. were collaring well, and a Torce resulted. A little later, Hurley eamo through, ball at foot, and Allen who had been "laying well, followed, up fast and scored Hooker' failing to goal. A moment later, Hurley badly heat the opposition and passed lo Tt. Oliver, who scored. High School hacks played a' fine game, being sunerior to their opponents. For the winners tries were scored by Hoffmann, Smart, and Lrown, two ~of which were converted by Osborne, whilst Brown potted a. coal from the field. Okato defeated High School B by 17 to 5. A Seddon Shield match was played at Westport to-day between Buller (holders) and Marlborough (challengers), and was won by Marlborough, after a strenuous game, by 21 points to 13.
