WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 24. The Waitara branch of the railway service must be a very profitable one, seeing the enormous amount of goods, etc., that come through the sheds, not forgetting stock and coal railed to the freezing works during the year, but for the travelling public the Department have np consideration whatever, Mr. Massey practically turning down Mr. Jennings' request for a resuscitation of the old 11.40 a.m. train for the south.
It was quite noticeable on Thursday last that very few football enthusiasts travelled by the 9.45 train to witness the Hawke's Bay-Taranaki match, it not being convenient to put the whole day in at New Plymouth, and especially those that could not get away from work. This is certainly loss of revenue, because the town was emptied by motor cars later in the day, which would otherwise have been the revenue of the Railway Department if a connecting special had been put on.
* Miss A. Bernsten, teacher at the Waitara School, is absent pn sick leave, and Mrs. Ling, who has had experience in England, is relieving. | The death occurred on Wednesday of Mrs. Wray, aged 72. She had been very i frail for a number of years, and recently had gone to stay with friends at Smart I Road, where she passed away. We all extend sympathy to Messrs. A. and W. Lash, the two sons of#the deceased. Mr. Rowland Lawrence, of Messrs. Borthwick and Sons' office staff, is leaving to go on the land in partnership with his brother. Friends will -wish "Roll" every success in his new venture. On Wednesday morning last, at the Convent, Father Kelly was surrounded by parishioners find the children, and presented with tokens of their esteem before he took his departure from the district. Mr. Rennie, speaking for the adults, said that Father Kelly had endeared himself to them all, and by reason of his kindly spirit had earned the respect and esteem of other denominations. (I endorse this latter remark.— "Corresppndent.") Miss Cora Watson, on behalf of the children, spoke very nicely, making eulogistic remarks to Father | Kelly for being such a spiritual helper and friend. The children were granted a half-holiday in honor of the occasion.
