For the first time for many months the fire-bell was rung about 7 o'clock on Saturday night, the outbreak being a fire in a chimney in a house in Mountain Road South. The locality of the Gre was not known for a considerable time after the bell i,vas rung, and much F.musement was caused in trying to find it. By the time the engine reached the scene, which was outside the borough boundary, the fire had been extinguished find all danger was passed. Plumbers hove boen having a field day to-day owing to the large number of water pipes which were cracked by the frost yesterday morning. It is stated that GJ degrees of frost were registered yesterday morning, as compared witli from 2>/ 2 to 3 degrees which was the average earlier in the week. As showing the amount of damage done, one plumbing firm received 23 calls for repairs yesterday. ; v Captain Martin Brown, of the local Salvation Amy Corps, has been unexpectedly transferred to Gisborne, and will leave for his new station to-morrow Captain Woosten will take charge of the Stratford corps.
