ENTERTAINMENTS.

EVERYBODY'S. The usual big Friday double change of programme will be shown at Everybody's to-night, when Gladys Brockell will star in the five-reel Fox feature, "The Scarlet Road," and "the popular Margarita Fisher in a comedy drama with a Western setting "Put up Your Hands." "The Scarlet Road" is a vivid and powerful drama of New York Bohemian life, and its unconventional men and women, whilst "'Put up Your Hands" is tlie unique story of an afliletic girl who goes West and "trims up" some of the fancied fighters of the camps. The story suits Margarita Fisher all to the ground, and she makes an excellent redblooded little dare-devil. The full programme will be screened at the matinee to-morrow. THE EMPIRE.

'THE HOODLUM" COMMENCING AT THE MATINEE TO-DAY*.

"The iHoodlum" is the second of Mary Pickford's wonder productions from her own studio, and tlie first she has made since "Daddy Long Legs," and the story is an adaptation of the well-known book "Burkse'a Amy/' by Julie Lippmann, which achieved such universal popularity in America and elsewhere. Mary portrays tlie role of a dissatisfied heiress who elects to live in the slums, where she gradually emulates her playmate and becomes a regular street urchin with the accomplishments of the denizens of the sordid environments. She finds real happiness among her humble companions that her wealthy surroundings never gave Jier. The outstanding feature of the production is the fact that it reveals hitherto unplumbed depths of versatility on the part of the little star, and the comedy-romance furnishes her with opportunities she has never before had. "The Hoodlum" will be shown at a matinee this afternoon, commencing at 3.30, and again to-night and to-mor-row night at 8 p.m. These are the only three occasions on which the picture can be screened locally.

Thfe famous Japanese artist as the clever young Hindu scientist, whose nobility of soul shone through his swart&y skin and helped him win a great struggle against mighty powers, and sustained Jiim throughout the throes of his hopeless love. "East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet," said Kipling, the seer, yet in this case the East loves the West and the West loves the East—and their meeting is in spirit only. Still the world *as better off for his love of East and West, for it begot human kindliness and love of fellow men. Caste and racial prejudice were the stumbling blocks in their mutual love—could they prove superior to tradition and overcome them ?
