FURTHER INCREASES PROPOSED. By T«l«grnßh.—Prest Assn.—Copyright. < Wellington, Last Night. In the House of Representatives this afternoon the House went into committee on the Judicature Amendment Bill. The Minister moved a new clause increasing the salary of the Chief Justice to £2250, and that of each of the other Judges to £2OOO. Mr, MeCallum spoke in contemptuous terms of the increases (given, and moved that the salary of the Chief Justice be reduced by £1 as an indication that the salary should not be increased.

Mr. P. Fraser put in a plea for the low paid workers and others in receipt of amounts that barely afforded a living. Highly placed, officials were not suffering any special' hardship from the high cost of living. Mr. Isitt protested against the suggestion that in dealing adequately with Judges' salaries members were lacking in sympathy with the low paid people of the country Mr. MeCallum withdrew his amendment, and the measure was put through committee, reported, and set down for the' third reading on next sitting day.
