THE EX-SOUTHERN CROSS. BRINGS BENZINE FROM 'FRISCO. Flying the New Zealand Ensign, the loarquentine, \*Babel, from 'Frisco, with a cargo of benzine was berthed at tTie New Plymouth wharf at 12.30 p.m. yesterday. A welcome glimpse of Egmont at nine o'clock the previous morning, when about 100 miles away, was the first sight of land since leaving the U.S.A. on April 24th. A light breeze brought the vessel further in, and at 9.20 yesterday morning the Paritutu proceeded about eight miles to tow in the barquentine. . She was boarded by the Harbormaster (Captain Waller) shortly after 'lO o'clock and the vessel was brought alongside after a journey of 75 days. Mostly calm? were experienced during the trip, the longest being a ten days' spell when in the vicinity of the Equator, and all on board had a trying time. The only communication ■with other slilpß was that with the C. S. Holmes (also in port here), Who passed the Ysabcl a fortnight ago. " Built about 45 pears ago for the Melneslan Mission for work among the Islands, and then known as the Southern Cross, summarises the early history of this little vessel. Subsequently she belonged to Captain Ross, of Auckland, for about 25 years, and was running among the South Pacfic Islands. The barquentine is now owned by (5, H. Scales, Ltd., Wellington. Captain Davies (Of Auckland), who has been in charge nor the 'last two years, was formerly of the Wellington Harbor Board staff. He leaves the vessel here for another period ashore, this time, it is understood, with the Marine Department, and will proceed to Auckland shortly. The first officer is Mr. F. W. Evans? and Mr. G, Simpson is second. The consignment of 5000 eases of benzine is for Mr. Newton King, and discharge will be commenced aa soon as possible. On completion the vessel will probably return to Auckland for survey. • .
