A SALUTARY FINE.

STEWARD AND A STOLEN COAT. Christchurch, July 6. At the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court to-day, before two Justices of the Peace, George Coombes, second steward on the Otarama, now in port, was charged with receiving stolen goods on thine 30, at Wellington. • The goods consisted of a lady's woollen jersey coat, valued at £5 the property of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The Bench remarked that while it was customary to deal leniency with first offenders, the present offence would have to be met with a severe penalty. Accused was fined £ls, in default two months' imprisonment.
