PRICE OF TIMBER.
DUE TO HIGH WAGES. THE POSITION OF EXPOHTB. • (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent^ Wellington, Last Night. Sir Francis Bell, speaking of the Got* ernment's timber regulations, said that the export is eo. controlled that the limited export daes not reduce by one plank the maximum supply available for the New Zealand market. Tho latest increase.in the price of timber was solely due to increased wages at the mills. The Board of Trade has positive evidence that on the ' average the factor of wages is responsible for 70 per cent, of the cost of timber, at the mills. The price of building timber on the New Zealand market is still very much leas than the figures offered for export, so that a large saving i» effected for the people of the Dominion. The price fixed for New Zealand has no relation at all to the ejtnort price, the local price being based stfictly on the cost of production. The Minister added that since April Ist no export of building timber had been permitted except from the 'West Coast of the South Island and the North Auckland district. The permits in these cases are conditional on full advantage being taken of All shipping available for New Zealand ports.
