COST OF THE BASIC WAGE. By 'releeraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 2, 8 p.m. Sylney, July 2. The New South Wales State deficit amounts to £1,804,000. The State Treasurer, explaining the heavy deficit in spite of a record revenue, said it was due to increases of unforseen expenditure. He instanced the establishment of a basic wage, which cost the country £1,758,000: Compensation on account of the influenza epidemic victims entailed £385,000; additional police pay £87,000; and fodder for starving stock £131,000. In view of the deficit further taxation was anticipated—Aus.-N.Z- Cable Assn.
