THE CURRENCY PROBLEM.
RESTORING GOLD STANDARD. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 2, 5.5 p.m. London, July 1. , A Select Committee on the embargo on specie recommends that South Africa should aim at the restoration of currency to the pre-war gold basis, and proposes that until there is a gradual return to normal conditions, legislation be introduced for taking gold out of circulation, replacing it by gold certificates, such certificates to be temporarily inconvertible. Pending the restoration of the gold standard the committee Tecommends the establishment of a central bank not competitive with existing banks, but having the sole right of issuing banknotes, centralising cash reserves of and regulating the expansion and contraction of the currency.—Aus.-N.Z.
