TRAGEDY AT HAWERA.
SUICIDE OF CAPTAIN DALLWGE4 A DISTINGUISHED SOLDIEB. Captain J. T. Dallinger, a L«t«ut u oflieer, well known in Hawera, where he had been in charge of the Group Area for some time past, was found dead in the bathroom at his residence y«sterday morning under circumstances which left no doubt that he had taken his own life. Captain Dallinger had been allinjj f«r some time past, and had been attended by Dr. Thomson, who saw him as late* as Monday evening. Yesterday morning he appeared to be much better, and after mentioning to his wife that he' was going to have' a bath went into the bathroom. Mrs. Dallinger went outside to attend to her household duties, and finding that her husband remained a long time in the bathroom she tried the door, which proved' to be looked. The door was broken in, and Captain Dallinger was found in the bath with a bullet through the head, while a service revolver was lying alongside the bath. Captain Dallinger had been in the 'Army for M years. He served in the Imperial .4rmy for four years, the Canadian Army for five years, and. on the New Zealand Staff for ten years. He left with the N.Z.E.F., and while on active service attained to the rank of captain in the Ist Wellington Battalion. He was decorated with the Military Cross, and had also gained the King's and Queen's South African Medals, the 1014-15 Star, the Victory Medal, and the Allies' Service Medal.
