WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, June 8. The auxiliary scow Turanga, 'purchased by Messrs. Stainton and Co., New Plymouth, is expected to arrive from Auckland this week. She will trade between Waitara and the amail ports along the coast. Mr. J. G. Russell, who was with Mr. S. G. Fraser, Waitara, for many years, has been appointed manager of the Farmers' Trading Company's branch at Pukckohe.

The fishing trawler Kapuni and tin auxiliary vessel Ethel came to port on Friday last with about 4 tons of fish. The Tikorangi settlers are finding difficulty in getting someone to take charge of the Tikorangi Post Office, no one seeming anxious to take it on. It is to be hoped that someone will fill the breach and save the position.

The half-yearly meeting of the Clifton Lodge of Druids was held on Monday evening, when a large number of members were present. Three new members were initiated, which brings the membership of this progressive lodge to over 100. The following officers were elected and installed by D.P. Bro. Blanchard: J.P.A. Bro. V. T. Borthwick and other consignees. The Catholics are making huge preparations for their forthcoming bazaar. | The different stall holders are holding socials and euchre parties to raise money for their particular stalls.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A sitting of the Court was held on Wednesday. Judgment was given for plaintilf (with costs), in the following undefended civil eases: Clifton County Council v. Bobt. H. Daveney, claim £74 10s 4d; Jury and Co. v. Hon Rangi and R. H. Phillips, claim £10; H. Adlam v. Topere, claim £9; Eraser and Healy v. Joe Taylor, £l2 lis 3d. The Borough ranger brought a charge against T. Evans for allowing a cow to wander on the streets. The ranger stated that he had asked the defendant for the driving and poundage fees, and he declined to pay and he brought this . case against him under tjie by-laws. The Magistrate ruled that the ranger was not within his rights in asking defendant for poundage fees without the cow had actually been impounded. The ease was dismissed without prejudice, the ranger being at liberty to bring it on again if he had sufficient evidence.

LICENSING COMMITTEE. ' The Waitomo Licencing Conirnittee held their annual meeting here on Wednesday. Present: The Stipendiary Magistrate, (chairman j, 1!. Piggoi, \V. Jenkins, R. Gribbon, W. 11. Marlowe. The police reported that the buildings were in a satisfactory state, and had no recommendations to make. The application of Spencer Ridgely for a transfer of the license of the Waitara Hotel from D. Leslie to himself, was granted, as were renewals of the Masonic, Club, and Urcnni Hotels. ' A wholesale license was granted to A. H. Hatrick and Co.

BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly' meeting was held on Wednesday. Present: Councillors Ogle Blair, Rennie, Beckbessinger, C. H. Johnston, and K. Gribbon. The deputyMayor (Mr. A. W. Ogle) occupied the chair in the absence of the Mayor. Councillor Rennie reported that the Works Committee had come to the conclusion that nothing could be done to JWiuston Street at the present time. It was resolved that Mr. Jackson be notified to that effect, and that tho Taranaki County be approached, seeing that half of the road is under its jurisdiction. The health inspector reported having inspected the alleged pig farm in Waitara, and that the pigs had been removed beyond any dwelling, the present conditions being satisfactory. It was decided to support the Auckland Railways Development League in petitioning Parliament for the linking up of the three Auckland main and other lines.

The Government forwarded a schedule of prices for metal from the Mt. Egmont quarry, but the Minister is to be informed the prices are far in cvc-ess of what the Council is prepared to pay, Messrs. Borthwiek and Co. were granted a renewal of their slaughtering license. Messrs. Lawrence and L. Tate applied for the formation of a footpath to their respective properties.—Left in the hands of Works Committee. Mr. Spurdle waited on the Council on behalf of the Clifton Hall, urging a reconsideration of the resolution requiring a fireman to be on duty at all socials and functions held in the hall. , Councillor Ogle said that he saw reason in what Mr. Spurdle )md said, but a previous Council had thought fit to impose the condition to the theatre, and what was good for one place of amusement was good for another, although personally speaking l , there was no need for any fireman to be in attendance at any hall except on special occasions, and he thought the Council should go into the' matter and settle it once and for all.

After full discussion, it was resolved that the question of whether a fireman is required at any of the public halls be left in the hands of the inspector. and that the licenses be amended accordingly, the brigade to be informed that they are to take instructions from the inspector.

It was decided to co-operate with the Stratford Council who asked for their resolution to be endorsed in the matter of approaching the Government with reference to a universal Saturday halfholiday. The Hawera Borough Council's request for support in urging the Government to remove the import duty on [children's boots, was complied with. Mr. Sprosen applied for the levels of the road fronting his section.—Left in the hands of the Works Committee. The ranger reported on stock ircpounded during the month, and asked for a rise in his salary owing to the high cost of living, it was resolved that he be allowed all poundage fees over the amount, of 30s. The overseer reported that he could not recommend any more water connections in Princes Street, as the pipe line is already overtaxed. It was resolved that a 33 1-3 advance in the water rate be made on all tinrateable properties in the borough, witli 'sh« txesption of lokooU and clurchat.
