At a meeting of the provisional directorate of tlie Stratford Mountain Hostel Company Ltd., the chairman and Mr. Richards were delegated to wait on the District Engineer with a view to making satisfactory arrangements regarding the Department doing the formation of the road by day labor. They were also empowered to make representations to the Minister of Public Works if necessary. The capital of the company is £SOOO and the minimum subscription, before' registration was fixed at £ISOO. Members present were assured this amount was definitely in sight. Shares to the value of £I2BO were allotted, leaving a further £220, or forty-four shares, to be applied for to complete the minimum. A further 200 shares are already in sight. The matter of canvassing for shareholders was discussed, and the meeting was of opinion that the business and professional people of the town could now be successfully approached. The chairman and secretary were authorised to secure Messrs. C. Jackson and J. Masters to undertake this work.

GENERAL. The grand return ball held.at Tariki on Wednesday evening under the direction of the men's committee, attracted a large muster. Music was supplied by Messrs. Fox, Dick, and Liehtwark. General musical items were contributed during the evening. Six members of the Stratford School staff were absent from duty through illness on Wednesday, yet the work went on as usual.

Frcdrie, of Stratford, left by the mail train on Tuesday night on an extended tour of Australia and Xew Guinea.

CHAMBRR OF COMMERCE. A general meeting of the Stratforl Chamber of Commerce was held on Tues- . day evening, Mr. J. B- Richards presiding over a good attendance. The Director of Agri:mlturc wrote stating it was not proposed to establish a central depot for the treatment of tin phosphate rock on arrival from Nauru. The system of .distribution was under consideration. The President moved that the attention of the Director be eallod to the desirability of arranging direct shipments of phosphate rock to Xew Plymouth, in order that Taranaki farmers might receive superphosphates with the minimum of handling and expense. The motion was seconded by Mr. I). J. Malonc, and carried. A report was made by Mr. Hewitt, regarding the conference held recently in Xew Plymouth regarding securing direct shipments of cargo from Britain to New Plymouth. Mr. Hewitt was thanked for his report: it was also decided to ask the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce to notify the Stratford Chamber regarding cargo space available, as early as possible. Mr. Thomson moved that the attention of the Government be called to the very unsatisfactory state of affairs as regards the connecting of the Welling-ton-Lyttelton ferry service with the Taranaki express train, and be asked to take the necessary steps to see that regular connections are made (weathar permitting).—Carried. The president reported on the main features of the work undertaken by the executive during the past few monthsThe question of* a clock tower at the new Post Office was discussed. Tne president said when the plans of the building came to hand this week, as expected, the Chamber would come to a ' decision.
