NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL.
LORD JELLICOE'S APPOINTMENT. The Prime Minister said on Saturday that he was very pleased at (lie appointment of Lord ili'lticoe to b<* Gov-ernor-General of New Zealand. The selection of this great sailor was a compl.ment to New Zealand, and was certain to be very popular. "it is quite certain," said Mr. Massey, "that both Lord and Lady Jellicoe will get on well with tlie people of New Zealand, who showed their regard for uur future Governor-General during the visit of the Admiral aboard the battlecruiser New Zealand last year. In addition to meeting Lord Jellicoe during that visit, I saw him on very many occasions during the sittings of the' War ' 'abini't in Britain, and I was to appreciate what his stay in l-he Dominion will mean to this country." Mr. Mussey dated that (he date of the arrival of Lord Jellicoe in New Zealand was not yet known. Information on that point was likely to be available soon. The appointment of Lord Jellicoe to be Governor-General of New Zealand is important in relation to the naval policy of the Dominion. Last year tiie Admiral made recommendations for the naval defence of the Pacific, his proposals including the establishment of ft New Zealand) division of cruisers, destroyers, and which would co-operate with the naval forcer, of Australia and Canada, and with the fleet to be stationed by Great. Britain in Far Eastern waters. The New Zealand Government has not yet dealt definitely with this scheme, and it appears that neither Australia nor Canada has readied a decision regarding naval policy.
