OUTBREAK IN CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Christchurch, Last NightA threat of a widespread influenza putbreak on the eve of the visit of the Prince of Wales led to the adoption of certain precautipnary measures In the city to-day. i>r, Telford, District Health Officer, said that since Wednesday, April 14th., there had been a considerable increase in the number of influenza cases reported in the city. From March 31st the figures had grown to 120, including twenty-two fresh cases at Christ's College, which was closed, and ten cases at a Maori pa near Lyttelton. The authorities had decided to close several Bchools as a precautionary measure. Of the 120 cases, one was ordinary pneumonia, three were influenza, and the balance were of a mild type. The position was not alarming in any way, and the action taken by the department was purely precautionary in view of the coming visit of the Prince of Wales-. The cause of the sudden outbreak was probably a cold two days' snap experienced last week. The Boys' High School is closed for a week.

CASES IN WELLINGTON. INCREASE FOR PASTS WEEK. Wellington, Last Night. During the week ended at noon today 238 eases of infectious disease occurred in the Wellington health district, an increase of (iU compared with the previous week. There was a jump of 72 in the number of influenza cases, 207 being reported for the week, as against 133 during the week ended on April 12. In the number reported 200 were mild and 7 pneumonic. The influenza figurer, include 32 from the Presbyterian Girls' Orphanage, Island Bay, and 42 from the Wanganui hospital district. The eases are pretty well distributed throughout the public hen Ith district, and are mostly of a mild type. Several schools in Blenheim have closed on instructions of the local school committees.
