DRESSING A GIRL'S HAIR.
COMPLAINT OF A PARENTTEACHER'S OBJECTION UPHELD, A difference of opinion over the style of hairdressing for a girl of eight year? of age was brought this week before the Wanganui School Committee for solution. The board forwarded on a letter from a parent, wherein the writer stated: "At the opening of the school I sent my little girl, aged eight. She is always clean and neatly dressed, and her mother spends some time curling her hair, which is thick and at an awKward stage. This trouble taken over the child's dress does not appear to satisfy the teacher, who insisted on her hair being tied back in a hideous fashion, and because Iher mother objected to comply with the request the child was sent home and told not to attend again unless her hair was tied back. The action taken- by the mistress in practically expelling a child of eight years from school for a thing over which the child or the mistress has no control, and which is no offence or contravention of the board's regulations, is a little beyond my understanding, and I would very much like to know if she has authority to do so. The existing circumstances have forced me to send the child to a more distant school." The headmistress wrote stating that it was a rule of the school that the girls had to liave the hair either tied back or plaited. Members of the committee considered that they should support the teacher in this matter, as they placel reliance on the teacher's judgment. It was decided to reply to the board that the committee had decided to uphold the teacher's action.
