AFFRAY ON A STEAMER.
TEE INCIDENT DESCRIBED. | STORY AT THE INQUEST. By Telepapb,—Pres« Allocation. Wellington, Last Night. The circumstances of the tragedy on the steamer Armagh on Tuesday night were investigated by the District Coroner to-day, when an inquest Was held touching the death of Robert McNab, storekeeper on the steamer Waikawa, In connection with this affair a fireman > named Benjamin H«nry Bright' standi indicted on a charge of murder. Alfred Parnsworth, able seaman, gaid he was talking .to Quartermaster Armstrong at the Armagh'* gangway when the accused Bright and a friend T on board. When a man named Colling appeared on the scene; in company rith lfc. Nab, BrigHt said to Collins: "CkHmjJiere, Charley." Collins 1 approached Wgfct, who hit him on the mouth, knocking him down. The deceased McNab was leasing against a ventilator, smoking a cigarette and Bright remarkeid to him, "WmtdM you hold me for?" McNab made tio ttply, and Bright then struck him 6a the face. The deceased'fell to the dcir-jnri while he was lying there Bright kMud him on the body three times. Witness did not see McNab interfere with Bright. Accused did not kick deceased very hard. William John Armstrong, quartenniaater of the Armagh, testified to seeing 4 • bit of a tussle between the deceased and Bright. His attention had been attract od before this by Collins exclaiming, ' "Don't hit me again; I'm crook." Witness saw the accused kick at MtiTafc about three times. McNab went back about three yards before falling. Dr. Kington Fyffe, who made a pott mortem examination of the body of dacensed, stated he found a superficial bruise about an inch above the left eye, another over the right ey«, and there was a third bruise 'below the left knee. There was no fracture of the rfbs ot skull; neither was there any injuty to the brain, or fracture or dislocation of the neck. The only cause of death witness could give was shock. The stomach was full of food. To the coroner: If a man was kicked over the solar plexus when the stomach was full that might account "for death. The Coroner's verdict waff that the deceased died on the deck of the Armagh after being knocked down and kicked by Benjamin Henry Bright, the cause of death being shock.
