ATTEMPTED BURGLARY.
HAWERA SHOP VISITED. An attempt was made early yesterday morning to break into Mr. Silson'a crockery shop in High Street, Hawera. At about 12.50 a.m. Mrs. Silaon heard a grating noise at the back door. She immediately got out of bed, switched on the light, and made' as much, noiee as possible, with the idea of intimidating Whoever might tie responsible for the noise. This she succeeded in doing, and apparently all efforts to effect an entry at the shop ceased immediately. On examining the door in the morning it was found that several large 'holes had been bored over the lock, the intention having been to remove the lock by boring a succession of holes around it. The bit must have come into contact with a nail, and it was this which, no doubt, caused what Mrs. Silson described as a "squeaky noise," and which disturbed her in her sleep. Mr. Silson is away from home. It was rumored that another shop a few doors away from Mr. Silson'a had been entered and a sum of money taken, but enquiries proved the rumor' to be without foundation.—Star.
