IRONSAND INDUSTRY.
NEW PLYMOUTH DEVELOPMENTS-
WORKS TO BE ESTABLISHED
Indications of important developments in the ironsand industry in New Ply. mouth were contained in correspondence which came before the Borough Council last night.
Mr. P. S. Leggatt (Welling. ton) wrote asking for particulars regarding the supply of electric power which would be required for iron smelting works he proposed to erect at New Plymouth. The information was urgently required, as "Major G. S. T«y. lor, M.1.E.E., of Wellington, will be advising me on the design, etc., of the plant for the projected smelting works at New Plymouth. . . . Now that I have my arrangements perfected in respect to »upplies of iron-sand, etc., I am ready to commence smelting operations in New Plymouth as soon as electrical energy on the minimum basis of 3000 k.w., 8Q per cent, load factor, is available. Mr. Blair Mason assured me that this minimum quantity would foe obtainable from your hydro-electric development in due course, and I am prepared to enter into a contract to take it and more at and when, it becomes available."
On this matter the Electric Light Committee reported that a telegram had been received from Mr. Leggatt, intimating that he had secured continuity of supplies of iron-sand, and that he would commence smelting by the electrical process immediately. The matter will be gone into by iha consulting engineer.
