L. Young, of Manaia, has received word that her father, Mr Nortfforthy of Wanganui, died on Thursday night. Mr. Nortworthy previously was one of tlio oldest inhabitants of Uranaki, and resided in Manaia, over 40 years ago.
Mr A. C. Buist, who for the past P months has filled the office of produce manager to the Farmers' Co-operative Organisation Socfety of New Zealand Umited, is severing his connection with the firm on 31st inst/ He leaves Hawera to join a old established iirm of mercantile brokers at Palmerston North Star.
The transference of Mr. T Vincent from the New Plymouth Gaol to be superintendent of the Mount Eden Gaol, has been confirmed by Gazette notice. This marks well-merited promotion for Mr Vincent to the senior position of gaolers in the Prisons Department. -No permanent appoitfment to the position at New Plymouth has yet been announced.

R Spence, Collector of Customs, yesterday, to ask if he would be prepared to accept nomination m the event of the Government providing for a nominee from the Public hervice for the position of Assistant 1 üblie Service Commissioner Mr Spence, who has had lon ff experience in the service in New Zealand, and who was recently on ihe staff of the HW. Mr. John Clegg, who died at Wellington, was born at Manchester, England 70 yearn ago. 'He arrived in the Dominion by. the ship British Crown, when a boy of thirteen years of age, and was employed for a while on the Lyttelton tunnel works. Subsequently the late Mr. Clegjr prospected for gold at Whakamarina and in Victoria. In ISB9 he came back to New Zealand and carried on the business of a builder at Oamaru Westport, and Hawora, The deceased leaves a widow, two sons and two daughters.
