WEST END SCHOOL.
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the West End School Committee was held on Friday night. Present, —Messrs. W. W. Thomson (chairman), J. Hawker, W. H. Broome, J. S. S. Medley, J. Brokenshire, J. Garcia, and W. J. Bennett (secretary). The headmaster (Mr, D. P. Evans) reported that the school re-opened with a full staff, Mr. Kountree, first assistant, Misses Boyde and Lindop, pupil teaehers, and Pitcaitliley, probationer, having later ■ taken up their duties. There were on the roll when school closed at the end of last I year oil, the number at date being 512. At the, commencement of 1919 the number on' the roll was 486. Owing to boisterous weather, misunderstanding as to date of opening, and prevalence of siekI nes§, the average was very low. Of the four pupils who sat for Junior National Scholarships, two gained scholarships, and two secured free places, one, W. Nash, being placed first among Taranaki candidates. Of the six pupil teachers and probationers who sat for examination, all secured passes in two or more, groups, Miss Evans and Miss Hawkes having completed. Reference was made to various matters that required attention to the school building .ind appointments. It was the intention to resume the giving of cocoa for lunches on April Ist. Mr Evans also suggested that the Committee should consider the advisability of establishing a library at the school. It was decided to communicate with the Board of Education regarding various repairs required. The secretary was voted an honorarium of £5 ss, reference being made to his work in the interests of the school.
