NEW RATES NOT APPROVED. MEN EXPRESS DISSATISFACTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ashburton, March C. At a stop work meeting of all local railway servants to-day it was unanimously decided to support the executive in any action taken, whether goslow or strike, regarding the latest wage offer, which was condemned as inadequte and especially unjust to single men. A further mass meeting will be held on Monday night.
DUNEDIN MEN'S REFUSAL. SUPPORT FOR EXTREME . MEASURES. Dunedin, Last Night. At a stop-work meeting held on Saturday the following resolution was passed unanimously:— "That this stop-work meeting of Hillside Workshops' employees, having read the report of Mr, Justice Stringer and the recommendations contained therein, decide absolutely to refuse to accept same, as we consider the increases recommended totally inadequate to meet the continually increasing cost of living. We cannot agree that railway workers should .be content to work for lees than the ruling wages in outside employment, nor are we prepared to do so. We urge our Executive Council to consider the position immediately, and pledge ourselves to support them in any extreme measures they may deem necessary to obtain justice,"
OTHER PROTESTS. Wellington, March 0. After consultation with Mr. Justice Stringer, Mr. Massey agreed that the single men excluded from the railway award should be paid half the amount granted to married men, in the case of the First Division £7 10s; In the Second Division, Od per day, beginning from January 1 last. Christchureh, March 0. A stop work mooting of about 500 employees in the railway workshops at Addington passed the following resolution:— On account of the cost of living increasing since the Railway Wages Board Eat we advise our executive to demand at least 5s increase and pledge ourselves to support them in obtaining the demand; also that the executive be urged to meet at o'nee to decide upon an immediate line of action. This meeting, after reading iir the newspapers Mr. Coates' partial denial of wanton destruction of military garments, still enters an emphatic protest, and we further respectfully request him to fulfill his contract to us as he had payments for articles sis; weeks In advance. We further ask employees to refuse to accept o return of thenr money until a final reply is received from the Hon. Mr. Coates. Auckland, March C. Judge Stringer's report has caused much dissatisfaction among railwaymen of both divisions here. They will discuss it at their meetings shortly, when it is understood that a proposal will be submitted" that Dominion stop work meetings be held to demonstrate dissatisfaction with service conditions-
