WAITARA.
POSTPONED PICNIC. (From Our Own Correspondent). March 2. It was rather doubtful if the picnic postponed from Thursday could eventuate on Saturday. Up to mid-itav heavy rain was falling, and the committee gave up all hope, but the afternoon came out in glorious sunshine, though too late to get the crowd of people that would have been present. However, the committee gave the children a good time, and part of the programme inaugurated for Thursday was got off. The following are the results:— Relay Race (Rewi Polo Challenge Cup).—'Waitara. No. 1 team (F. Floyd, C. Tate, R McMillan, R. Sampson), first; Waitara No. 2 team (N. Ford, W. Ozui, 11. Wakely, D. Bird), second; Waitara No. 3 team (H. Eivens, C_ Swans, R. Blanchard, A. Rowe), thirdThe winners were the holders of the cup and had 1 a fairly easy victory, doing the distance (about lulf a mile) in 1 min. 57secs. Tug- of War.—Waitara No. 1 team (H. Ewens, H. Wakely, L. St. George, R. McMillan, E. Sampson, W. Oziu, and C. Tate), first. The team pulled eight other boys from the school, who were picked up at the last moment, and a good three minute go eventuated. Stepping the Chain.—R, Syme (winner). There were a good many entries, including a good number of lady sports. 100 Yards School Boys' Race.—C. Tate 1, R. McMillan 2, F Floyd 3. School Girls' Race.—H. Johnston 1, L. Fowler 2, M. Calgher 3. Races for the young fry were run at intervals during the afternoon, and the toys and goods kindly donated by the tradespeople were quickly disposed of. It was unfortunate the weather was against picnicing, otherwise no doubt there would have fceen teams competing from other schools. The committee and the saciety generally have been most unfortunate, as it means that what improvements were contemplated are now set back another year, unless the Society can raise funds by .other means. The afternoon tea stall was in the hands of Mesdames Blanchard, Brabant Spindle, Muschamp, G. Wilson. The soft drinks and ice cream stall was in charge of Mesdames Chappell, ' Young, and G. Nosworthy. Owmg to there being no entries for the returned soldiers' race the trophy donated by Mr. Gavth lias now been given for a race to be run bv the committee I understand that Mr. R. Tate will do the handicapping for the event, which will take place at an early date.
NOTES. The steamer Mamari. which is expected in the roadstead, at the end of the month, will he lifting about 12,000 carcases, as well as wool. The Freezing Works are practically full, and a slack" ening of hands was in operation last wdek. It is particularly unfortunate for those who are unlucky to be put off, especially when go much stock is offering. The o/s Malioe, the launch that, was capsized on the bar about twelve months ago, two lives being lost, has l>een refitted and is about ready for sea ngain. I understand that }'lr Heckhessinger lias bought her, and wiil trade her to the river porta The Cement Pipe Company is finding a difficulty in keeping their work-; go- »'£■ owinjy to tlifi shortage of oemoiit* but expects to get relief shortly, as supplies are now promised. ' Tbe local Druids Lodge held its usu.il 1 fortnightly meeting on Mondav evenin" when twenty-eight brothers were present. Three members were, initiated, and two more proposed. This Lodge is upon the centenary mark, judging by the way they have been adding members lately it will not be long before it reaches the second kindred. It was decided that socials be held fortnightly, starting from Wednesday. 11th inst., the proceeds to go towards a suitable Honors Board for the soldier brothers who fought in the freat war. *
