With the bat—Palmer. High School, 40. With the ball—Dinnis, 11 wickets for 20 runs; Sutherland, .7 for 13;%Sarten, 7 for 28; Brown, 6 for 14; Inch, 5 for 8; Kinsella, 5 for 39. Saturday's play in town was dull and unenterprising. New Plymouth, without the services of Hes'krtt, Johnson and Weston, were opposed by Freezing I Works. With Lash, Dinnis'and MacI donald out for 12 runs the latter team had fair prospects of getting New Plymouth out for a small score. However, INicoll and Sainton, by good, defensive work, carried 'the score to well past 50, when Clarke dismissed Nicoll. The succeeding wickets fell rapidly until Sutherland joined his captain, and the pair added another 25 runs before Kinsella broke' through Sutherland's defence. Saunders and Palmer, who shaped well with the bat against Old Boys the previous Saturday, were cheap wickets. Stainton gave a good exhibition of batting, watching Clarke's deliveries right up to the bat whilst he scored very freely from any balls short pitched. Clarke at one period bowled very steadily, whilst the fielding of Morrison was very noticeable, his picking up being clean and returns accurate. On going to bat, the Freezing Works confidently anticipated making a fair score, and with Johnson and Heskett absent, this was reasonable. Yet, on the actual play, they never from the first over looked like getting the runs. Their defensive work was very crude, the stumps being lowered on 13 occasions during the two innings. Pinniss was well on the spot, securing 11 wickets, 8 clean bowled. Stainton again gave a sound exhibition of wicket-keeping, only allowing 2 extras in the game, whilst he caught Morrison out. Tikorangi promise to make matters very interesting in future games. After scoring a popular win against New Plymouth A team, they demonstrated this' was no fluke by having a margin of 22 runs in their favor when opposed to Old Boys. Tlie latter had a strong team in the field, but the defensive tactics of Eggleston 30, E. Sarten 24, W. Foreman 10, and Lye 12 laid the foundation for a score that topped the century. On past performances this should not have been beyond their opponents, as Osborne, Eggleton, Bottrill, and Hughes ore capable of making those runs; instead, this quartette of batsmen made 5 runs and it was left to Monteath (2S) and Bcwley (18) to make the effort to overtake the deficiency. Credit must bo given to Sartcn's bowling, as he obtained 7 good wickets for 28 runs. C. Foreman, chiefly responsible for the victory over New Plymouth A, had 12 runs hit off him without a wicket. Excepting Purdue, the New Plymouth B team had their usual strength wr.t , n i pitted against High School. Thanks to' Palmer (40), and Willis (Hi) the school made a pood start, and those following adding a few. and extras a useful 12, the total was brought to 104 At the end of the second round bottrill, for the Old Boys, heads the batting averages of the club, scoring 01 vun= with ' »n avwage per innings of;
18.20. Bewley is next, 108, 17; Eggleton, 131, 10; Osborne, ITS, 16; Mouteath, 214, 13. In the bowling department Hughes has secured 29 wickets for an average of 5.52. Osborne is a close second, his 41 victims costing 5.95. Bottrill is third, If), Q. 03; Monteath, 18, 8.01. Thursday players have had little play during February. Owing to the races they lost one Thursday, and then rain prevented play the two following weeks. New Plymouth have won the competition, and probably the season will be brought to a close shortly. It is unfortunate Urenui were late in entering as the country eleven in the two matches played proved a very fair combination, and had no difficulty in defeating Albion and Waireka, &
