QUESTION OF TARIFFS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright. Allahabad. Feb. '2O. The Imperial Legislative Council delated the need for the preference system in India. Sir George Barnes, me>n.her of the Viceroy's Council, movcp}-)-,^, the appointment of a committee to examine trade statistics and giv-j an opinion whether it would be consistent with the interests of India to apply to the Indian customs' tariff a system' of preference in favor of goods of European origin. He explained the reason for raising this thorny and difficult question was because the principle of Imperial preference had recently been adopted by the United Kingdom Government. He desired a purely dispassionate view of the question, but if India accepted the principle of Imperial preference the excise duty of cotton piece goods must be totally abolished.
After opposition by some Indian mem bers a committee was appointed.
