MEAT AND HIDES.
REQUESTS TO THE GOVERNMENT
GISBORNE FARMERS' VIEWS.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. At a meeting of farmers held yesterday to consider the meat and hides. questions about fifty farmers iepresen,t-' ing all the surrounding districts wera present.
The chairman (Mr. G. .T. Black) re' viewed the. position and said that far'-" mers should insist upon the Government having all frozen meat lifted before the new season commences, say; on November. 1. As regards hides, farmers had been badly treated by the Government and had suffered' a loss of £1 per hide. Mr. J. 11. Machell moved: "That in the opinion of this meeting, the New Zealand Government should continue most urgently to press the Imperial authorities to see that adequate shipping facilities should be definitely provided in order to lift the whole of tlte Imperial meat from New Zealand stores l>y November Ist next; further, that in view of the congestion of meat in New Zealand and England, the Imperial authorities be strongly urged to discontinue the control of the high retail prices of meat, as at present, and allow' a free market, so that the price of meat may be reduced, thus assisting imma,rtiateiy to relievo the congestion of meat; and further, in the opinion of this meeting, the Government should see that there is no further extension made of the commandeer of our meat; wool, hides and dairy produce, and that we revert to pre-war conditions as soon as possible; that the New Zealand Gov. crnment be requested to make arranger ments so that producers are represented on any conference dealing with these matters, particularly dealing with shipping and freight questions. Mr. Machell's motion was carried and the meeting decided that Messrs. John Clark, W. G. Sherratt and K. S. Williams should be appointed a committee to go to Wellington to deputationise the Prime Minister to keep in touch with the present position. Mr. Lysnar was left off the committee, so that ho cauM introduce the deputation.
HIDES AND BOOT PRICES. Palmerston N„ Last Night. A meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants passed a resolution on Saturday that the Executive Council of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants draw the attention of the Premier to the hoarding of hides in the Dominion, causing inflated prices of boots and boot repairs, and request the Government to take immediate steps to release hides as a means of preventing an industrial upheaval in the near future.
